Springer-Verlag (Berlin - Heidelberg - New York)

"Springer-Verlag is one of the most prestigious international scientific publishers today, with subsidiaries and representatives all over the world. Its publications range from medicine to all fields of life sciences, and from mathematics to engineering. Wherever scientific research is carried out, highly qualified experts count themselves among Springer's authors, among them a large number of Nobel prize winners. Around 1400 people are employed by the Springer Group worldwide.

Springer-Verlag was founded in Berlin in 1842. It began publishing literary and political texts, and after the 1870s focused on life sciences, engineering, and medicine. After World War I, Springer expanded its medical book division by acquiring several renowned publishing houses. In the 1920s, the publishing house was already primus inter pares among German scientific publishers.

Springer's Berlin headquarters was totally destroyed in 1945. For this reason, offices were established in Heidelberg in 1946. Under the management of the Springer family and Dr. Heinz Götze, the publishing house pursued a policy of continuous growth. Today Springer is the third largest book publisher in Germany and is one of the largest scientific publishers on the international scene. As of January 1999, Bertelsmann is the majority shareholder with 86.5 percent.

Springer publishes annually over 2,400 new books and approximately 500 journals. A total of about 19,000 books are currently available, 60 percent of them in English. Besides the German-speaking countries, the USA and Asia are the most important markets. In addition to the headquarters in Berlin and Heidelberg, the subsidiaries in New York, London, and Tokyo in particular develop international publishing programs. Subsidiaries are also located in Paris, Barcelona, Milan, and Hong Kong. Furthermore, numerous other publishing houses and technical industries in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland belong to the Springer Group" (text: © Springer website)

Our Book Store Favourites around the World

Strand Book Store, New York

828 Broadway (at 12th street), NY, N.Y. 10003, USA

In 1927 Benjamin Bass opened Strand Book Store on 4th Avenue, New York's famous Book Row of America. Named after the famous publishing street in London and an old literary magazine, Strand Book Store has long been known for remarkable deals on great books. Ben's son Fred began working in his father's store when he was ten years old. After a tour of duty in the Armed Forces, Fred returned to the family business and took over its management in 1956. Soon after, he moved it to its current location at the corner of Broadway and Twelfth Street. When Mr. Bass moved the store to its Broadway site he rented 4,000 square feet of the building. Now, four and a half decades later, he owns the building with Strand taking up five of the eleven floors, and a second store on Fulton Street in New York City's financial district. Strand Book Store remains a fiercely independent family business. Fred's daughter Nancy represents a new generation of bookselling, bringing the Strand Book Store and its 200 plus employees into a new era.

Strandbooks.com has all of the great deals thousands of people come to Strand Book Store to find everyday.
