This volume contains the revised presentations of a conference organised in December 1997 in Madrid by UNISCI for STRADEMED, a network of ca. 30 research institutions. It focuses on the perception of present and long-term challenges confronting the Mediterranean region from 12 social scientists from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, France, Spain, Germany, Netherlands and the USA.

Editor: Antonio Marquina is professor of international relations at the Faculty of Political Science at Complutense University, Madrid, Spain. He is director of UNISCI and was first president of STRADEMED.
